Rock Bottom Leaving and Nine Locks coming to Spring Garden Road

(Halifax, NS) - After ten years on Spring Garden Road Rock Bottom Restaurant and Brewery has announced its permanent closure. It was a great place in a great spot but never really found the success it should have had. The space will be taken over by Nine Locks Brewing. The new second location will have all available Nine Locks Beers on tap as well as retail for take away and the brewhouse will be used to brew beers for Your Father's Moustache (YFM) and act as a test brewery for new and different beers. The food choices will be scaled back and be a limited selection from YFM. Look for it to open late summer.
While I was chatting with owner Shaun O'Hearn, He mentioned changes coming to YFM as well, the last renonvations bumped the taps behind the bar to 30 which carried Nine Locks Beers and a variety of Molson products, he says they are going to still have Nine locks showcased but will be adding craft beers from around Nova Scotia, The Maritimes and beyond, hoping to have special beers not available elsewhere in Halifax that you can enjoy in their restaurant. YFM will be reopening in a couple of weeks with the changes coming soon.

Maritime Beer Report - December 12, 2014

Hello and welcome to the December 12th edition of the Maritime Beer Report.

Big Axe Brewery released details on their newest Imperial Pale Ale Wrath of Putin Imperial Pale Ale. This ale is golden amber colour and is brewed with Centennial and Golding hops from Southan Farms. The ale is double hopped to give it a strong hop flavour, aroma and a bitterness of 75 IBUs and has a malty sweetness which provides the perfect balance. It weighs in at 7.5% to get you nice and toasty during the cold season.

Distillerie Fils Du Roy has been distilling great spirits for a few years now in the Acadian Peninsula of New Brunswick and recently got gear to brew. They have all the approvals and licences except the one to sell in New Brunswick from ANBL. They say this may not happen until the next board meeting in February 2015.They are very positive and hopeful.
In the meantime they released notes on their Caraquet Flyer Biere de glace (Ice Beer). Apparently during the brewing process it is partially frozen with the ice crystals removed making a stronger beer. This process sounds similar to a German Eisbock beer. I will pass on any information I get on their status.

Something I am a huge proponent of is the Community Supported Breweries (CSB) and Railcar Brewing is offering this  for Christmas. For 125.00, 250.00 or 500.00 you support the brewery and get an array of great perks, it is a super gift for a beer lover if you have the means. Get more details at the brewery or on Railcar's facebook page.

Shiretown Beer says that its Honey House Ale made with Charlo's Buckwheat Honey is available at the brewery this week end.

Garrison Brewing Company released its Spruce Beer today. In addition there is a logoed glass for sale and a limited addition gift box. There is a barrel aged edition of last years spruce beer coming out very soon as well.

Rock Bottom Brewpub announced that Brewmaster Jake Saunders has joined their team to eventually take over from Greg Nash when he leaves.

Sea Level Brewing releases its High Street Wee Heavy Scotch Ale in time for Christmas. From Sea Level "A dark ale with a malty aroma followed by a sweet caramel taste with hints of roasted, and toasty flavours. A very approachable easy drinking ale that’s only available when the weather sucks." It is a warming 6.4% ABV. Look for it on tap where fine craft beer is served and in cans at the Halifax bottle shops and select restaurants around Nova Scotia.

Tatamagouche Brewing Company spilled the beans on their holiday brew that is available now at the brewery and at The Ladies Beer League's brunch at Bar Stillwell on Sunday. Say hello to Maple Squash Ale, brewed with Red Kuri squash from Waldegrave Farms and maple syrup from Acadian Maple. This festive ale is 5.1% ABV and is sweet with a hint of spice.

Enjoy whatever you decide to do this week end and as always enjoy responsibly.

In addition they have a Hop Hash Strong Wheat Ale in the tank. They say u it is a 6.2% ABV with medium bitterness that is hopped with Southan Farms Hop Hash. The hop hash is made up of the farms Golding hops. The grist bill is half wheat malt and the other half is made up of prairie 2 Row, Munich, Vienna, Caramunich and topped off with toasted wheat.

Trail Way Brewing Company was busy as they prepare to open for business. This week they were brewing up a batch of imperial brown ale that they are calling Grizzly Oak. Brown that they say "like a grizzly and to be aged for some time on oak. Should be quite complex".

First sensation is the hop forward presentation from copious amounts of late hops, and dry hops. It's followed by a gorgeous roasty body with a hint of wheat chewiness, fruity middle notes and then backed up by bracing bitterness in the finish". It is available in 650 ml bottles and has a 6.5 % ABV.
They also announced they are on tap in New Brunswick at The King Street Ale House in Fredericton, Tide and Boar Gastropub in Moncton, Lemongrass Thai Fare in Saint John, Ducky's in Sackville, Laundromat Espresso Bar in Moncton and 540 Kitchen & Bar in Fredericton.

In Nova Scotia it is going to be in six packs and they tell me New Brunswick in 500 ml bottles. They also did their annual trip to Meander River Farm to get spruce boughs for Spruce Beer, look for it soon. One other note, Kellye Robertson, the assistant brewmaster is leaving to be brewmaster at mysterious soon-to-be opened craft brewery in Halifax in 2015. She won the Garrison 2012 brew-off with  Kellye  R's Wild Rye'd IPA,

Granite Brewery is now brewing Darkside Black IPA today and should available within two weeks. This is a healthy 6.75% ABV.

North Brewing Company has finally released their newest seasonal Belgian Milk Stout. It is in 750 mL swing tops, growlers and next Thursday in 650 mL "bombers" at Bishop's Cellar. They say that the "warm roasted malt character is complemented with a smooth body and a subtle belgian yeast character.

From the blog "Our classic Bamberg-style Rauchbier was brewed with over 80% of the malted barley being beechwood-smoked, the remainder being Munich malt. It's a blend of smoke and malt with balance and intensity completely complementary of one another. A true lager with Märzen-like qualities sporting a malty, toasty richness and an almost bacon-like smokiness (mmm bacon), it's delicious. Finishes malty and lightly sweet with moderate, balanced, hop bitterness. It weighs in at 5.3 % ABV and 21 IBUs.

Rogue's Roost Brew Pub has a new beer on tap from Jake. The Double IPA is 8% ABV and 85 IBUs. It's hopped with Falconer's Flight, Cascade, Galena, and a touch of Saaz. The winning brewer will be invited to brew their beer at Big Spruce in time for launching at the Local Connection Halifax Craft Beer and Local Food Event on January 15th, 2015 and in general release after that. I will release more details as I get them, getting brewing.

Gahan House - Halifax released their new seasonal ale. Hopgoblin is an imperial red ale, weighing in at 8.4% ABV, is now on tap.

Garrison Brewing Company shared that they are barrel-aging Spruce Beer and Grand Baltic Porter. The barrels started their journey at Wild Turkey with a stop at Ironworks Distillery. Stay tuned for more information and release dates.

Hell Bay Brewing Company released another batch of the R.I.P.(A.) this week in growlers and kegs. No details but Mark says limited quantity.

Rockbottom Brewpub is releasing Ultimate White IPA on Saturday Oct 18th at 4 PM. This latest brew is a hybrid of sorts; a redux of their Ultimate White IPA. From Greg Nash's blog "IPA meets Witbier. Brewed with malted barley, wheat, oats, coriander, bitter orange peel and plenty of hops: bright and fresh with hop forward citrus notes, coriander and orange cut through making their presence known - it's almost like orange soda plowed with hoppy goodness. Hybrid deliciousness for your glass." Rock Bottom is pairing this up with Cyra Belbin's famous deep-fried Mac'n Cheese bites. This beer comes in at 5.7% ABV and 8 IBUs.

Looking forward to tomorrow's Nano tap takeover at Stillwell. This iteration is probably what I looked forward to the most as these beers I report on but rarely or never get to try.

Speaking of Stillwell's they released today that they collaborated with Boxing Rock Brewing on their Anniversary Beer. It is called Merci Biere and it is a strong ale weighing in at 8.4% ABV. Look for this one at Stillwell on November 16th and in private stores after that.

That is all for this week, take care and until next time enjoy responsibly.

Maritime Beer Report - October 3, 2014

Hello and welcome to the October 3rd edition of the Maritime Beer Report.

PEI Brewing Company has welcomed its Sydney Street Stout back to its shelves. Be on the look out for this, one of my favorites.

Big Tide Brewing Company now has its Pumpkin Ale on tap. They say to get it while you can and its Indian Beach Pumpkin Ale should be ready mid-week. They brewed another batch of pumpkin this week but no more fresh hops though.

Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault had Bob LeFrais available this week at the brewery, it is Bob LeBoeuf made with the fresh hops grown in Grand-Falls.Quantities of this are very limited.

Celtic Knot Brewing says for those who missed it the first go round Tide and Boar tapped a fresh keg of "Ring of Fire" smoked jalapeño and habanero beer for a limited time. Celtic Knot is now brewing a "Caledonia Scottish Ale". Brewed as a 70 or a heavy depending on what you prefer and will come in around 3.8% and guaranteed to be a malty quaffer.

Bad Apple Brewhouse has been quiet but busy this summer. They sent me a quick note to tell me what they are up to. They brewed a Cucumber Mint Beer called Operation Green Ring that is a 5% ABV, a 7% wet-hopped IPA called Terroir and they filled 2 red wine barrels with Black & Tackle and these should be ready around Christmas time.

Big Spruce Brewing has made Das Sprucebier! An Oktoberfest Amber they brewed especially for the Marion Bridge Oktoberfest on Saturday at the Mira Centre, 4037 Gabarus Highway from 3pm to 10pm. They released a small amount at the brewery. It is 5.9% ABV and 23 IBU and was brewed with 100 % imported malted barley from Germany.

Garrison Brewing Company has released its annual wet-hopped ale, 3 Fields Harvest Ale today. They also released its new Double Jack Imperial Pumpkin ale. This 8.0% ABV dark amber ale is made with local pumpkins from Howard Dill's Pumpkin Farm.

Rockbottom Brewpub made some beer changes this week. Thulsa Doom is out so they are putting on the Insidous Black IPA and they have also run out of our Jacktar stout for a bit so they will have a lovely London Style Porter on for a bit.

Atlantic Canadian Beer Awards are this week end. They will be judging 166 beer entries in 15 categories from 27 Breweries & Brewpubs on Saturday. Public events are a beer and food pairing event on Saturday afternoon, the awards gala on Sunday evening at The Stubborn Goat and the Ladies Beer League is having a book launch with Mirella Amato on Monday at Lion and Bright.

Bar Stillwell has announced another exciting event on October 18th. A NB Nano tap takeover highlighting seven breweries from our neighbor to the north. There are two sessions and the cost is 15.00 and that will get you a t-shirt and your first drink. There will be several styles on the taps that we've never poured before, including a young lambic, a berliner weisse and and an all-brett beer.

East Coast Beer Tours has adjusted their beer tour and cut the price in half to try to attract more people They've downsized the bus to a 28 passenger mini-coach. It's the same number of tickets but no tables or mini kitchen in the back and as a result, there is no space for a live musician or to offer/prepare food or beverage service while en route. They will still going to be visiting Meander River, Paddy's Brewpub and Bad Apple Brewhouse where you will still get to sample their beer and talk with the brewers. There will be a light snack provided at Paddy's and a BBQ in Berwick with some local sausage and pork. It is a great deal for 50 bucks check it out.

Tomorrow is City Harvest 3.0 and Halifax is teaming with great deals. I wrote a quick guide for beer lovers to highlight some of the beer stops. Check it out here

Thanks for joining me again this week and until next time enjoy responsibly.

Maritime Beer Report - August 29, 2014

Hello and welcome to the August 29th edition of the Maritime beer report.

Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault announced that Taunte Blanche was bottled and is making its way down to ANBL stores on York Street in Fredericton, Régis Street in Dieppe and Vaughn Harvey Blvd in Moncton.

Picaroons Traditional Ales says Upstream Ale is now getting released around New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. They say "Help support the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation by drinking BEER!" On the shelves for a limited time in support of the Foundation.

Picaroons' also announced that they've brewed a new beer. Announcing the Selection Double IPA, a new IPA that's hopped to the max with Pride of Ringwood, Brambling Cross, Cascade, Orbit, Galaxy, Sorachi Ace, & Slovenian hops. But say say beware, this is a strong ale weighing in at 7.9% ABV. The Selection Double IPA will be getting tapped on Thursday September 4th for in-Growlers only, at the BREWTIQUE in Downtown Fredericton, and at the Alcool NB Liquor Prospect Street location in Uptown Fredericton.

Pump House to Brew Ancient Stone Beer in Celebration of 15th Anniversary. During the Middle Ages, brew kettles were made of wood and could not be direct-fired from a heat source without the fear of burning the kettle to the ground. With necessity being the mother of invention, brewers of the day developed what is now known as Stein Beer, stein meaning “stone”.
These clever beer-making alchemists of the day would add super flame-heated stones to the beer wort which achieved the desired heat levels required. During this process, the malt sugars that are present would caramelize directly and immediately to the stones creating a very distinct flavour.
Pump House Stonefire Ale will commence its path into Maritime brewing history on September 3rd complete with a “Stone Drop” event. Only 4000 750-mL bottles of Stonefire Ale will be available for purchase and will be on the shelves at ANBL and NSLC stores in late October.

Big Spruce Brewing thanks the hop pickers and says they are using the first of their on farm, fresh organic hops to this year's wet hopped ale. They call it Hoppily Remarried. They say it is a slimmer and younger version of last year's harvest beer. They say the IBUs are incalculable - lots of magnum, cascade and Mt Hood hops. They are brewing as an Imperial IPA and hope to reach 8.4% ABV.

Rock Bottom Brewpub says that Rhubarb π will be on tap Today. This lacto sour is 4.6% ABV and is acidic and tangy, refreshing, barny, and tastes like, you guessed it, rhubarb.

Ladies Beer League is offering a sneak peak of The Gahan House Harbourfront. Join them on September 8th at 7 pm and sample 10 of Gahan's brews with brewmaster Karen Allen. There were a few tickets left a lunch time today.

Thanks for joining me again this week and enjoy responsibly over the long week end.

We fermented this unique brew using yeast similar to that found indigenously in the Senne Valley of Belgium, southwest of Brussels. Maritime Beer Report - July 11, 2014.

Hello and welcome to the July 11th edition of the Maritime Beer Report.

A another new brewery is trying to open in Riverview New Brunswick. AWOL Brewery hopes to brew up unique beers including mead. They have a crowdfunding campaign running right now on Indiegogo to raise $18,000 for commercial equipment to get them off the ground. This is a great grass roots chance to help get a small local business going. There are all kinds of levels to pick from and I really hope you consider helping him out and there are some great rewards as well.

Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault launched their Tante Blanche last week and is available at the Deck Resto-Bar, at Station 127, at Frank's Bar & Grill and at the Fraser-Edmundston Golf Club.

Hammond River Brewing is brewing a new beer. It's a California Steam Ale style of beer and will be called "Gammie'. The name is a tribute to the recent passing of the brewers father, and it's what all of his grand kids called him. HRB says "This will be a very easy drinking beer with bready and toasty notes, along with some fruitiness. This will be brewed with San Francisco lager yeast but fermented a little closer to Ale temperatures, which will make this beer very unique."

Garrison Brewing Company announced their prices are going up this week in relation to growler fills. The prices will now be as follows: Core brands (Tall Ship, Irish Red, Nut Brown, etc.) will be $10 for a Growler fill and $6 for a Growlito fill. Their Premium beers such as our Imperial IPA will now be $11 for a Growler fill, and $7 for a Growlito fill. They will continue to have their All Day Growler Happy Hour on Thursdays with $1 off a Growler fill and $0.50 off a Growlito fill.

North Brewing Company had a great pairing event at Harbourstone Sea Grill and Pour House last night. At the event we got to try the new Halifax Common beer they are releasing tomorrow. It is a California Common style which is new to me. It was a dark straw in color and slightly cloudy. It had some nice fruitiness and biscuit flavors with a slight dry finish. It comes in at 5% ABV and should make a great summer beer. Other news from North is that they now are bottling 650 ml bombers that will allow them to be for sale at private stores.

Propeller Brewing Company are bringing back Prop'r Cask Night after a long hiatus on  August 15th for a special 'Sausage Fest Edition'. Local chef Ludo Eveno of Agricola Street Brasserie will prepare a sausage feast worthy of memory. Of course being a Cask Night, patrons will also get to enjoy a very special one-off beer along with a fine roster of Propeller craft brews. Included in the ticket price is an Official Commemorative Sausage Fest Glass to remember this special event.

Rock Bottom Brewpub July Beer dinner menu for July 29th has been released. It only $35 for three courses each paired with one of our fantastic hand crafted beer.

  • Beer Battered Halibut Cheeks and Citrus Aioli & Micro Fruits with Belgian IPA
  • Beer Braised Lamb Shepherd's Pie with Porter
  • Poached Pear with Vanilla Ice Cream and Beer Caramel Sauce with Bigwater Brown

Sea Level Brewing says that its Blooberry Pail Ale has been on tap for a bit at the Port Pub, but is now in cans! This 5% ABV beer is made with Bloo Juice, blueberry juice made in the Annapolis valley. Seems like a great combination.

Picaroons Traditional Ales is asking for a few more volunteers for the Picaroons' Brewers Bash tomorrow. They say "If you don't have tickets, and would like to get into the festival for just about 4 hours of work, we would love to have your help!!! Please email volunteer@picaroons.ca NOW if you are interested!!  Thanks so much! (Oh, and THERE WILL be a volunteer party at a later date too, with LOTS of beer!)"

Speaking of the Picaroons' Brewers Bash, I will be there tomorrow sampling and taking photos. If you see me say "Hi".

Maritime Beer Report - June 6, 2014

Hello and welcome to the Maritime Beer Report for June 6th 2014.

I like to keep it light and positive here on the report but but with the killing of three RCMP officers in my hometown of Moncton NB. I just want to say that my thoughts and prayers are with the families of the officers and the people on Moncton and I am so glad he has been captured so normal life can return.

From Big Axe "[White Birch Porter is] our twist on the traditional American Porter brewed with pure white birch sap. It is dark brown in colour with medium body. White birch porter is slightly smokey with aroma of dark roasted nuts, rye bread and chocolate. Birch sap  is naturally slightly bitter, it compliments bitterness of the noble hops nicely while making this porter complex and original." They also sent me their notes on the Simon Saaz Summer Ale saying "A ray of golden light shines through a thin patch of the blotchy white sky. Our summer ale is light gold in colour, dry and refreshing with a citric hop aroma and crisp flavours of orange and coriander. Released from a dark closet of winter, Simon Saaz Summer Ale is moderately hopped with 5.5% ABV and is sure to satisfy. It's a perfect summer day in New Brunswick."

Big Tide Brewing Co. announced that they have Blueberry Ale back on tap.

Hammond River Brewing released that its inaugural batch of Too Hop To Handle Double IPA was kegged this week. They say "it tips the scale at a hefty 8.4% ABV and 103 IBUs.
