Maritime Beer Report - August 21, 2015

Welcome to the August 21st edition of the Maritime Beer Report.

PEI Brewing Company released a huge amount of news this week some of it new and some of it more details. First is some details on their cask program at the brewery, they say every two weeks, or less depending on volume, they'll have a new cask to try out. They say to expect some very interesting flavours and some things you may have never seen before.
They've still got the Galaxy hop version of our Vic Park Pale Ale available and say a Mandarina Bavaria version will be released shortly, watch social networks to find out when and where. They are also be releasing Vic Park in a 473ML can in September using the Citra hop variety.
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago they kept a fair amount of ReAnimator Bock and stored it away in some oak barrels. They will be releasing this as a 750ML premium seasonal in September. PEIBC also says their to look for their Pumpkin Ale, also slated to return in early September.  Finally their Transmitter Coffee Stout will also be returning this fall .

Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault has released a new seasonal, John Stadig, an Orange-Ginger White Beer. They warn this 4% ABV limited release and won't last long. If you are wondering the back story on John Stadig, he was a famous counterfeiter in the 1930s from the Saint John River Valley who got caught and sent to Alcatraz. He's one of the few men who managed to escape from this famed prison. His remains are buried at the Connors cemetery in Upper Madawaska County.

Flying Boats Brewing is having a Launch Party on Thursday September 3rd, starting at 7 PM at the Laundromat Expresso Bar, 382B St. George Street in Moncton. Come join in celebrating NB's newest local Craft Beer brewery and enjoy a hand crafted Ales.

Grimross Brewing Company's new beer, a Belgian Dubbel has been released. It is amber brown, smokey caramel, with a warm finish and 6.8% ABV.

Hammond River Brewing Company also has a brand new beer, it's a 10.4% Belgian Dark Strong Ale called Sterke Monnik. Look for this one and the return of Gammie in a few weeks.

A new brewery that I heard of recently popped up on social media yesterday in a big way. Maybee Brewery is currently building a 10 barrel operation at 559 Wilsey Road in Fredericton this fall,  They go on to say their beers will be available at ANBL stores in 16 oz cans, at some of your favorite craft beer bars in Fredericton, as well as at the Brewery taproom by the glass, growler, keg or can. They list five beers on their website, looks like hop and belgian loving brewery. Look for my Q&A with the owner Paul Maybee.

Uncle Leo's Brewery has its Winterschlaf back on, it is the Kolsch they had on last winter. It is 5.5% and 25 IBU.  Light, refreshing and crisp.

The Official Beers and Ciders for Sausagefest next month were revealed.
Propeller Wind Swell Wheat - This American Pale Wheat beer is a brew that’s mild and approachable yet has a lot of personality. Ample additions of Cascade hops bring flowery, citrus & spice notes while the wheat added provides a silky smooth finish.
Garrison Hammerschlagen Brau - Named after the German game played at Halifax Oktoberfest, this “Oktoberfest Brau” is brewed in the traditional marzen style to create Germany’s most popular fall beer. Pleasant toffee like flavours, medium body and low hopping make this seasonal lager worthy of celebration.
Bulwark Hopped Citrus Cider - Celebrating two of our native crops—hops and apples—Nova Scotia’s first hopped cider is a citrus-forward brew. It begins with a special blend of Annapolis Valley apples designed to tame the bitterness characteristic of dry hopped brews. Cascade and comet hop varieties combine with the apple base to create a light and refreshing cider featuring notes of lemon and grapefruit.
Boxing Rock Kerfuffle APA - A fresh, bright, coppery gold pale ale with a balanced malty backbone and smooth bitterness to wash down your carnivorous sausage indulgences. Dry-hopped for extra punch, the hop character is like a south shore hurricane, building in intensity until it blows you away. Henry also added that this has 100% Canadian hops.

I had the pleasure of visiting Kellye Robertson at Spindrift Brewing yesterday, look for a blog on my visit early next week.

Thanks for joining me again this week and as always enjoy responsibly.

Hello and welcome to Canadian Beer Day edition of the Maritime Beer Report.

Barnone Brewing says its new 'lil' DIPA is light in malt, big in hops. This is from lots of late additions and dry hopping. It weighs in at 8% ABV and look for this one at the brewery soon.

The Gahan House in Charlottetown says it has Legally Blonde now on tap. It is a light body Belgium Style Ale which comes in at 5.5% ABV. It's pale yellow in colour, lightly hopped, and has a slight fruity flavour. Served with a thick creamy froth and an orange wedge.

PEI Brewing Company pulled the curtain back a little futher on its new DIPA 8 Cord. PIEBC says "We pushed the malt aside to let the hops shine through on this big, dry and tropical brew. Expect citrus, pine and floral aromas with just enough bread malt flavour to carry the strong, smooth bitterness." It will be out in  473 mL cans in PEI and comes in at 8.5% ABV.

Big Tide Brewing Company says it was brewing Chocolate Porter this week as well as hopefully a double IPA this week end. Watch for those soon.

Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault released their "festive" brown this week. Called Buckdjeuve or "jackalope" the brewers say it has a little spice , a little chocolate , a little molasses, a ton of flavor and  7.3 % ABV. Available now at the brewery.

The latest news on Grimross Brewing Company's is that after time and many very long nights, they have their first batch fermenting in the new brewery at 600 Bishop Dr. They expect to be open for business in about 3 weeks. What a Christmas present for Fredericton area.

For you U-889 from Boxing Rock Brewing fans I heard through the hop vine it will be back in a week or two just in time for Christmas.

Meander River Farm had some big news this week with the release of a Imperial IPA. The new brew is Haymaker IIPA  and is a healthy 8.5% ABV. They say this brown ale is intensely hopped throughout the brewing process to achieve the rich hoppy flavour and bitter finish characteristic of the style. This brew packs a big punch, hence the name. Get it now at the brewery and select taps.

North Brewing Company's new Belgian Milk Stout is the first beer on tap at the Smiling Goat Organic Espresso Bar at Bishops Landing new expanded food menu and beer on tap. Two great local companies together.

Another great gift is tickets to the Second Annual Craft Beer & Local Food Celebration but they are down to less than 15 tickets so your window for this one is closing fast.

That is it for this week. I am busy working on three special reports coming out in December with the Christmas Beer guide coming in a couple of weeks. Until next Friday enjoy responsibly.

Hello and welcome to the November 21st edition of the Maritime Beer Report

Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault are having a bit of fun on their facebook page. They are releasing a new beer next week and are adding pieces to a puzzle to let their fans try to guess what it is. All that has been revealed so far is that it is Christmas related, it will be 7.3% ABV and is going to be legendary. More details next week.

Grimross Brewing Company kegged off the last batch (Ben's Country Cousin) at Picaroons Brewtique. They say their beer will still be available at Picaroons Brewtique until theyopen in mid to late December at 600 Bishop Drive in Fredericton.

Hammond River Brewing are staying busy after the brewer took a vacation. They brewed Switchback Brown Ale with the next two planned brew sessions will be the Too Hop To Handle Double IPA and a new Chocolate Coconut Porter called Into The Dark.

Picaroons Traditional Ales says Feels Good Imperial Pilsner is back but in the latest batch they used some leftover local hops from their harvest ales. Traditionally the hop profile is only Saaz hops, though in this batch there's Nugget, Centennial, and Magnum.

Railcar Brewing Company says they are working on a Spiced Gingerbread Ale that will feature some oak chips soaked with spiced Sailor Jerry's Rum. That will be a great treat. Also after running out of beer for a few days there should be Brown Ale back on tap soon.

Shiretown Beer currently has five beers available at the brewery. They include their three year round beers, the Venezuelan Express (porter) and Black Currant Wheat. In addition they have a Hop Hash Strong Wheat Ale in the tank. They say u it is a 6.2% ABV with medium bitterness that is hopped with Southan Farms Hop Hash. The hop hash is made up of the farms Golding hops. The grist bill is half wheat malt and the other half is made up of prairie 2 Row, Munich, Vienna, Caramunich and topped off with toasted wheat.

Trail Way Brewing Company was busy as they prepare to open for business. This week they were brewing up a batch of imperial brown ale that they are calling Grizzly Oak. Brown that they say "like a grizzly and to be aged for some time on oak. Should be quite complex".

Staying with New Brunswick the ANBL has added another store to its growler program. Sackville is now offering three taps to fill growlers during select hours. This week is Picaroons Winter Warmer, Muskoka Cream Ale and Le Trou Du Diable L’Amère Indienne.

Boxing Rock Brewing Company introduced The Darkness Cascadian Dark Ale today at local bottle shops and the brewery. They say "a true India Pale Ale, albeit with an unexpected colour, it's hoppy, bright, and packed full of big flavours ... pours with almost stout-like black inkiness, capped with a nice tan head. First sensation is the hop forward presentation from copious amounts of late hops, and dry hops. It's followed by a gorgeous roasty body with a hint of wheat chewiness, fruity middle notes and then backed up by bracing bitterness in the finish". It is available in 650 ml bottles and has a 6.5 % ABV.
They also announced they are on tap in New Brunswick at The King Street Ale House in Fredericton, Tide and Boar Gastropub in Moncton, Lemongrass Thai Fare in Saint John, Ducky's in Sackville, Laundromat Espresso Bar in Moncton and 540 Kitchen & Bar in Fredericton.

Garrison Brewing had a busy week. First they released the 2014 Winter Warmer into the NSLC and private stores. In Nova Scotia it is going to be in six packs and they tell me New Brunswick in 500 ml bottles. They also did their annual trip to Meander River Farm to get spruce boughs for Spruce Beer, look for it soon. North Brewing Company has finally released their newest seasonal Belgian Milk Stout. It is in 750 mL swing tops, growlers and next Thursday in 650 mL "bombers" at Bishop's Cellar. They say that the "warm roasted malt character is complemented with a smooth body and a subtle belgian yeast character.

Rock Bottom Brewpub says Mr. Nash has created a wonderful Rauchbier that will be hitting the taps tomorrow at 4 PM. Say hello to Smoke & Mirrors.
From the blog "Our classic Bamberg-style Rauchbier was brewed with over 80% of the malted barley being beechwood-smoked, the remainder being Munich malt. It's a blend of smoke and malt with balance and intensity completely complementary of one another. A true lager with Märzen-like qualities sporting a malty, toasty richness and an almost bacon-like smokiness (mmm bacon), it's delicious. In addition to using Cascade, Mount Hood, and Centennial hops they harvested from LaHave Natural Farms, and over ten pounds of Chinook hops from Boxing Rock's own hop plants in Shelburne they used one hundred pounds of buttercup squash also from LaHave Natural Farms. To round out the beer they used Two-Row Pale Malt grown in Quebec, Maris Otter and some Kilned Amber Malt for some beautiful colour. They say the buttercup squash comes through nicely in the beer, with a great hoppy flavour that can only be had from a wet hopped harvest beer. Picaroons Traditional Ales says Upstream Ale is now getting released around New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. They say "Help support the Atlantic Salmon Conservation Foundation by drinking BEER!" On the shelves for a limited time in support of the Foundation.

Picaroons' also announced that they've brewed a new beer. But say say beware, this is a strong ale weighing in at 7.9% ABV. Pump House to Brew Ancient Stone Beer in Celebration of 15th Anniversary. During the Middle Ages, brew kettles were made of wood and could not be direct-fired from a heat source without the fear of burning the kettle to the ground. With necessity being the mother of invention, brewers of the day developed what is now known as Stein Beer, stein meaning “stone”.
These clever beer-making alchemists of the day would add super flame-heated stones to the beer wort which achieved the desired heat levels required. During this process, the malt sugars that are present would caramelize directly and immediately to the stones creating a very distinct flavour.
Pump House Stonefire Ale will commence its path into Maritime brewing history on September 3rd complete with a “Stone Drop” event. Only 4000 750-mL bottles of Stonefire Ale will be available for purchase and will be on the shelves at ANBL and NSLC stores in late October.

Big Spruce Brewing thanks the hop pickers and says they are using the first of their on farm, fresh organic hops to this year's wet hopped ale. They call it Hoppily Remarried. They say it is a slimmer and younger version of last year's harvest beer. They say the IBUs are incalculable - lots of magnum, cascade and Mt Hood hops. They are brewing as an Imperial IPA and hope to reach 8.4% ABV.

Rock Bottom Brewpub says that Rhubarb π will be on tap Today. This lacto sour is 4.6% ABV and is acidic and tangy, refreshing, barny, and tastes like, you guessed it, rhubarb.

Ladies Beer League is offering a sneak peak of The Gahan House Harbourfront. Join them on September 8th at 7 pm and sample 10 of Gahan's brews with brewmaster Karen Allen. There were a few tickets left a lunch time today.

Thanks for joining me again this week and enjoy responsibly over the long week end.
