Maritime Brewers Bring Home 23 Medals and Brewery of the Year at 2024 Canadian Brewing Awards

The 2024 Canadian Brewing Awards occurred this past week end in Hamilton Ontario with the Gala happening Saturday night to had out the awards for the best beers in Canada. 

This year over 1,800 beers were entered from across Canada in 61 categories with the most-entered category being Category 38 - New England Style India Pale Ale. 

From the 61 gold medal winners Best of Show or "Beer of the Year" was Corsaire Dark Mild from Corsaire Microbrasserie of Quebec.

The award for Brewery of the Year went to Nova Scotia's own Boxing Rock Brewing who won the most awards with three gold medals. 

The breweries in Nova Scotia brought home twelve medals including five gold, five silver and two bronze. Boxing Rock Brewing took an impressive three gold for their IPA, Puck Off and Temptation Red Ale before their Brewery of the year honours. Tanner & Co Brewing won a gold for their Belgian Blonde and silver for their Wheat. Tatamagouche Brewing delivered a pair silvers for their Two Rivers Baltic Porter and Arvo. Newcomer The Brewery By Quinn's took a silver for Tommy' Tipple and a bronze for Meltdown Manor DIPA. Finally, Schoolhouse Brewing scored a gold for Vice Principal, Garrison Brewing took silver for Ol' Fog Burner and Saltbox Brewing achieved bronze for Old Foundry Stout. 

Moving to New Brunswick breweries, six breweries took seven medals. Grimross Brewing achieved a gold and silver for Diggin' Oat Stout and Maritime IPA respectively. Two breweries won gold to round out the top awards for the province, Tire Shack Brewing for its Tiki Bar and Long Bay Brewing for Mild Sedation. Foghorn Brewing was awarded silver for Irish Goodbye, Trailway Brewing attained bronze for Fetch Lager and Novum Boreas also got bronze for their S'more Noir. 

Lastly to the red dirt island of PEI, four breweries took a medal each. Bogside Brewing got a silver for Proper Pub Ale and Libra Beverage, Copper Bottom Brewing and PEI Brewing all won bronze for Libra Pale Ale, Eclipse and Beach Chair Lager respectively.

Maritime Brewers take 14 awards at 2021 Canadian Brewing Awards

The 2021 Canadian Brewing Awards took place in Quebec City on September 18th and 165 awards were handed out. Maritime breweries collected 14 awards, with 4 each going to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island and 6 to New Brunswick. The hardware brought home was by mainstays and newcomers. Prince Edward Island

For North American Style Pale Ale the Gold was given to Broadside from Copper Bottom Brewing. They also took Gold in American Style Imperial India Pale Ale for Parkman Ave. In addition Copper Bottom won a Bronze in the Oatmeal Stout category for Ken's Stout. 

Rounding up PEI newcomer Modern Brewer’s Village Green took a Bronze in the Belgian-Style Tripel with Tripel.

New Brunswick 

Fredericton's Grimross Brewing took three Bronze awards with Baltic Porter, Cheval D'or in the French and Belgian Style Saison category and Maritime Cream Ale in the Cream Ale category.

In the North American Style Amber/Red Ale category Havre St-Pierre - American Amber Ale from Four Rivers Brewing took Bronze. 

Moosehead Breweries took a Bronze for Grapefruit Radler in Fruit Beer. 

The lone Gold for N.B. was for the multi-award winner  Barram from Brasseux d'la Cote for Wheat Beer - North American Style.

Nova Scotia 

The four awards in Nova Scotia were divided between different breweries. North Shore's Tatamagouche Brewing won a Bronze for Giantess Barley Wine.

In the Sweet Stout or Cream Stout category Deja Moo! earned a Silver for Garrison Brewing.

In the tough New England Style India Pale Ale category a Silver went to Galaxy IPA  from Propeller Brewing Company. 

Lastly a Gold in Smoked Beer was taken by Uncle Leo's Smoked Porter by Uncle Leo's Brewery.

New Brunswick Brewers Place in Eight Categories at Canadian Brewing Awards

(Halifax, NS) - The 2018 Canadian Brewing Awards were held in Halifax on May 26th with four brewers taking home awards in eight categories. Grimross Brewing took home four awards, Foghorn Brewing grabbed two awards and Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault and Pump House Brewery taking one each.

Grimross took Gold in European Style Amber to Dark Lager category for Après Lager, Silver in American-Style Black Ale category for Maritime Black IPA and bronze in Porter category for Pugnacious Porter and Maritime Cream Ale in the Cream Ale category.

du Petit-Sault

Rothesay brewer Foghorn Brewing nabbed two bronzes Golden Grover in the English Style Pale Ale category and one for Esty Special Bitter in the English Bitters – Best Bitter or ESB category. 

Les Brasseurs du Petit-Sault achieved Gold for Col. John Baker Dubbel in the Belgian-Style Dubbel and Pump House Brewery took bronze in the Dry Stout category with its Muddy River Stout.

Five Nova Scotia Brewers Win At The 2018 Canadian Brewing Awards

(Halifax, NS) - The 2018 Canadian Brewing Awards were held in Halifax on May 26th with five Nova Scotia brewers taking home nine awards in eight categories. All the winners are in the new wave of brewers starting in the last five years. 

New comer 2 Crows Brewing have been amazing beer lovers in Halifax won a gold Bonanza! Foedre Aged Wheat Wine in the Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer category and two silvers for Dynamo Rustic Saison in the French and Belgian Style Saison category and   Never Again Foedre Aged Brett Pale Ale with Peaches  in the American-style Brett Beer category.

North Brewing, who have won several CBAs peviously, added a silver in the Kellerbier/Zwickelbier category for its Little Beast, a silver in the  Belgian Style Abbey Ale/Pale Ale category for it perennial favourite Gus’ 65m Ale and a bronze for Oh My Darlin’-Clementine Brett Pale Ale in the American-style Brett Beer category.

The other winners was Tatamagouche Brewing's Giantess Barley Wine taking silver in Barley Wine-Style Ale – American-Style, Boxing Rock Brewing took a silver in North American Style Amber/Red Ale for Temptation Red Ale and Meander River Farm & Brewery won bronze for its Smoky Chipotle Porter in the Experimental Beer category.

Maritime Brewers Bring Home National Awards

The 2017 Canadian Brewing Awards were handed out last evening at the end of the 15th annual conference. the awards had 55 categories for beer with an additional 6 for ciders. The Brewery of the Year went to Mt. Begbie Brewing from British Columbia and Beer of the Year was Indie Ale House's Spadina Monkey. 
Local brewers successful in bringing home a lot of awards including many gold. The following list is of all the local breweries and their awards:
- Brasseurs du Petit-Sault won Bronze with La Kedgwick in European Style Lager (Pilsner).
- Boxing Rock Brewing captured Gold with Stayin’ Alive is Bock – Traditional German Style category
- Uncle Leo’s Brewery also grabbed Gold with its Vohs Weizenbier  in the Wheat Beer – German Style (Weiss) category 
- North Brewing had a double Gold night winning in the Belgian Style Abbey Ale/Pale Ale category with Gus’ 65m Ale and in Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer category with its newly rebranded Midnight Glenora Barrel Aged Strong Dark Belgian.
- PEI Brewing had a triple award outing with a Silver for Patience in Belgian-Style Brett Beer category, a Bronze in the Session India Pale Ale category for Vic Park APA, and another Bronze in Wood and Barrel-Aged Strong Beer for Hell Street.
- Propeller Brewing won Bronze for its Porter in the Porter category. 
- Pump House Brewery took Gold in the Dry Stout category with their Muddy River Stout.
- Moosehead Breweries won a pair of Bronze awards for Moosehead Lager in North American Style Premium Lager category and for Moosehead Cracked Canoe in the Light (Calorie-Reduced) Lager category.
Nova Scotia cideries Bulwark Cider and Ship Builders Cider did very well in the cider category. Bulwark Cider took Silver with Bulwark Original for New World Cider, Bulwark Blush took Gold in Cider with Other Fruit, a Bronze for  Bulwark Hopped in the Cider with Herbs/Spices, and Gold in Specialty Cider for Bulwark Rum Cider.
Ship Builders Cider took a Gold and a Bronze in Sid’s Chai Cider in Cider with Herbs/Spices and Sid’s Wild Blueberry Cider in Cider  with Other Fruit respectively.

The 12th Canadian Brewing Awards Maritime highlights

The Canadian Brewing Awards (CBAs) took place in Fredericton this past week end. The CBAs are open to brewers of all sizes throughout Canada to compete in thirty-eight style categories. The CBAs also recognize a Canadian Brewery of the Year, Beer of the Year and Educator of the Year. This years CBAs had more than 900 beer entries from nearly 140 Canadian breweries, up from 760 entries in 2013.

Breweries from all three Maritime provinces took home four medals. The highlights were:

• Boxing Rock Brewing Co won bronze in the Imperial India Pale Ale category for their Vicar’s Cross Double IPA
• Picaroons Brewing Co. won bronze in North American Style Blonde/Golden Ale category for their Blonde Ale.
• PEI Brewing Co. won a bronze in Wheat Beer – North American Style category for their Sir John A Honey Wheat Ale.
• Rockbottom Brewpub won gold in the Imperial Stout category for their Wreckoning Russian Imperial Stout.

The tops in show were Sasquatch Stout by Old Yale Brewing with Beer of the Year and Great Lakes Brewery repeating as Brewery of the Year.

The location was announced for 13th Canadian Brewing Awards and will be in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario in 2015. Dates and locations to be announced.
