NSLC Sees Large Influx of Local Craft Beer to Stores

(Halifax, NS) - The NSLC is excited about the development of the Nova Scotia craft beer industry and are preparing for a tidal wave of local beer hitting their shelves. By May they will have 42 Nova Scotia Craft Beer listings from 18 breweries in stores. Listings include many first time appearances including established brewers Big Spruce Brewing and North Brewing and many new brewers including Trider's Craft Beer, 2 Crows Brewing, and Downeast Beer Factory. The NSLC will also have Nova Scotia specific beer sections in stores.
When the new listings are added Nova Scotia Craft Beer will constitute 19% of all NSLC beer listings. Currently local craft beer is 65% of their total craft beer sales and 3% of total beer sales overall.
This move is great for all involved with local beer fans having greater access to regionally available brands, giving the brewers better access to consumers and the NSLC supporting and encouraging local brewers.

MBR March 24, 2017 - New Brunswick/Prince Edward Island Edition

Here is the beer news for the first week of Spring??

A reminder Upstreet Craft Brewing is releasing a new beer next week. Go Devil is an American IPA with a tempting hoppy flavour and a fun fresh finish. Weighs in 6.66% ABV and 43 IBU's.

Big Axe Brewery says the Maple sap is running and they are ready to make their annual Maple Amber. Enhanced and renamed to "Maple Stone Amber" brewed with 100% maple sap from Stone Family Maple Products of the historic Pokiok sugary. Watch for the release date.

Graystone Brewing has a new pale ale for you all to try. Lost Pale is 4.9% ABV, 50 IBUs and hopped with Czech Saaz and Fuggles. This pale is a light easy drinking beer with some spicy notes from the saaz.

Hammond River Brewing introduced Mount Carleton Grapefruit IPA. The American IPA was brewed exclusively with Summit hops giving it wonderful citrus aromas of Orange, Tangerine and Grapefruit. Since Summit hops were used, and Mount Carleton is the highest Summit in the Maritimes, the name seemed fitting. Also added to this beer was lots of freshly zested Grapefruit peel. This IPA is 6.5% ABV, hopped to 60 IBUs, and will be at HRB tap accounts this week.

Loyalist City Brewing have released the second batch of their flagship beer, Lupulus Interruptus. They have refined their recipe to produce an even hoppier, crisp American style IPA. Hopped with as much Citra, Cascade, and Simcoe that they could fit in a batch. Limited release.
They also have their first release for the spring season, Württemberg Weissbier. This classic German weissbier, or hefeweizen, is brewed with 100% German malt, hops, and yeast to create an authentic, refreshing, and flavourful ale.
Württemberg Weissbier is a medium bodied, highly carbonated, refreshing German mit hefe weissbier that has a sweet bread like flavour complimented by banana and clove flavours from our Bavarian yeast strain. German malted wheat and pilsner malt is mashed together in a traditional three-part step mash to produce a wort that promotes the development of the unique banana and clove flavours that complement the complex wheat body of the finished beer. The mash is done in soft water that replicates the water found in Pilsen, Germany to allow the natural flavour of the wheat to come through and be complimented by the subtle floral hop aroma.
The finished beer is gold in colour with a fine haze, and a pleasing banana-clove aroma that is complimented by moderate bready malt flavour from the German wheat and Pilsner malt. Named after Württemberg, Germany the historical German territory that was home to the majority of the German-Canadian settlers that helped to colonize the Atlantic Canadian provinces. Württemberg Weissbier is brewed according to the 500-year-old German traditions of the Reinheitsgebot, or German purity law, that shaped modern brewing techniques across the world.
Look for this to be hitting the taps soon with an early release Cask & Kettle Irish Gastropub.

Slow news week, have a good week end and I will be back next week with the news.

The back story from the brewery is "In the past, large vessels arrived from distant and unknown ports and entered the Bay of Chaleur to the most remote villages. When these vessels approached the coast, they brought their sails and picked a flag which meant that they needed an experienced pilot to help approaching the coast. At that time, there was no lights, no buoys, no aid to navigation and most importantly, no dock. Once the ship is firmly anchored in a safe place, they went in search of furs.
These Marauders liked the Aboriginal villages, because they knew that the inhabitants were vulnerable, easy to operate. Aboriginal people exchanged their valuable pelts against novelties and items without value. Among these pirates, the infamous captain Craig was certainly the best known. Legend has it that captain Craig entered at the beginning of the 19th century the waters of Chaleur Bay, he would have gone too far one day and would have kidnapped two young Aboriginal girl in nebulous drawings.
Released from their attackers, they returned to the shore but cast a spell to the ship which strayed from sides. Captain Craig and his crew perished struck by a suddenly dismantled sea. And since this tragedy, when the weather is similar to that of that fateful day, the boat of Captain Craig can be seen in the form of boat fire nicknamed the ship Phantom Ship!"

MBR March 17, 2017 - Nova Scotia Edition

Happy Saint Paddy's day, here is the report for this week in Nova Scotia.
Good Robot Brewing now has Red Moon Landing on tap. The beer was brewed by their Femme Staff. The beer was to be released last week for FemmeBot: Taproom Takeover event, but it wasn't quite ready. This fruity, strong, tropical beer is an homage to Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson and Dorothy Vaughan—mathematicians responsible for critical calculations in launching NASA space missions.
Today marks the return of  Dave & Morley Coffee Brown. This version features Rwanda Kanzu coffee rather than Rwanda Gisuma for a chocolatey, woody, and bourbon-y character.
They also sent a little teaser. They've installed Buffalo Trace Bourbon barrels to which the Tom Waits for No One (American Stout) and Mississippi Goddam (American barleywine) will be transferred. Watch here for details.

Boxing Rock Brewing and rogue brewer Karen Allen and she came up with a terrific idea for a stout using a "secret" recipe. My Mate, Secret Recipe Stout is "a beautiful dry Stout that hits all the right notes: big, dark, roasty, malty, with just the right type of bitterness to balance out the big malt character, and then there's that je-ne-sais-quois character that makes it so mouth-fillingly chewy and big." This is all wrapped up in a beer with just 5.5% ABV.
Lastly the six finalists for the Black Box Challenge 2017 were picked. Final judging is at on Sunday afternoon at Stillwell.

Roof Hound Brewing has an Irish Cream version of their Handsome Devil Coffee Milk Porter. Only one keg exists so get in and try it out. This one is jazzed up with almonds, vanilla bean and Irish whisky and is 7% ABV.

Schoolhouse Brewery had a successful first brew day at their new brewery. The Windsor location takes one more step toward opening.

Spindrift Brewing has released Killick Session Lager in cans, that I mentioned last week, at the brewery. Look for them at NSLC soon.

Tatamagouche Brewing is doing a tap take over tomorrow at La Torta Pizzeria in Wolfville on March 18th, starting at 2 PM. Twelve different taps, door prizes, live music and no cover charge.

Bulwark Ciders released The People’s Cider Project over the week end. As you may recall Bulwark encouraged folks from around the province to donate apples from their property toward a new Bulwark cider. The apples were pressed and fermented resulting in a rustic cider expressing true terroir, apple blossom aromas, pear, clover honey with a crisp, dry finish. This year’s People’s Cider is 7.8% ABV and will be available at private retailers and the NSLC's Port of Wines location.

Have a great week and what ever you do be safe and kind.

MBR March 10, 2017 - Nova Scotia Edition

After a long absence I am back, local brewers have been very busy.

Boxing Rock Brewing released Stayin' Alive Bock . It is a traditional lager style packed with great malty bready flavours and a terrific mild hop flavour from old-world noble hops. They think they've got a winner and it is 6.8% ABV.

Garrison Brewing was one of twelve breweries from across the country thet teamed up to make  a collaboration mix-pack for Canada's 150th this year. The brewer line up is Red Racer Brewing,  Last Best Brewing & Distilling, Black Bridge Brewery, Beau's All Natural Brewing, Micro-brasserie Le Trou du diable, Yukon Brewing, NWT Brewing Company, Picaroons Traditional Ales, PEI Brewing Company, Quidi Vidi Brewing, Half Pints Brewing and of course Garrison. Watch out for it on store shelves in May, with special east and west coast 6 packs in select provinces and territories.
They also released DIPA TEST BATCH, CODE NAME: JUICY 2, available now at the brewery.

Lunn's Mill Beer is now Nova Scotia's newest brewery. They opened last week at 515 Carleton Rd in Lawrencetown. They opened with four beers:
Charming Molly - Blonde Ale

XPA #1 - IPA
Check out their hours on facebook.

Nine Locks Brewing says their Fathom DIPA was super well received and have run out. Look for its return next week.
They have a new beer out too, Vanilla Porter. The smooth, round, full-bodied porter has 3 vanilla additions to produce a massive vanilla aroma. The body exhibits the traditional roasted malt qualities of a great porter with a full palate and dark chocolate notes. The finish is long and dry with a lingering vanilla character. It is a 5% ABV beer.

North Brewing have released Doki Doki Dubbel, a black cherry dubbel. They say "When we think double cherry our minds go to Super Mario 2 (a re-skinning of the Japanese classic Doki Doki Panic). And just like in the game if you down 5 of these there is a good chance you will see an all powerful star man rising up from the ground*." The 7.4% has cherry upfront, raisin and dark fruit. Subtle spice on the finish. Available in growlers now.

Saltbox Brewery is releasing Doppel Bock 1753, “The Winter Beer of Lunenburg County” today. They say it was originally brewed by monks to carry them through the Lenten season.

Spindrift Brewing has three new beers arriving in cans soon. Killick Session Lager and Blueberry Chai Pils will be coming in early spring and Blood Orange India Pale Lager in early summer. More details on releases as I get them.

Unfiltered Brewing has been busy.
They released Commissar Russian Imperial Stout that was conditioned on oak for 20+ weeks and fortified with JD Shore Black Rum from Halifax Distilling. It is a health 11.6% ABV.
