Maritime Beer Report - August 28, 2015

Welcome to the August 28th edition of the Maritime Beer Report.

PEI Brewing Company says with the return of the Harvest 4-pack comes the return of Harvest Time lager - super crisp, great hop aroma and finish to it. Available in the retail store at the brewery now and soon in the 4-packs to PEILCC and Alcool NB Liquor stores

Upstreet Craft Brewing have released the details on their collaboration with Emily from Boxing Rock Brewing. The new India Pale Lager known as Rumble in the Alley: Round 1 is set to release on September 5th, the day of the Block Party. The Block Party will be on September 5th and is a free outdoor event in their parking lot from 12-8pm, with an after party in the taproom following the event. This party will feature local food vendors, live musical performances, a pop-up barber shop, lawn games, activities, and more. Upstreet will also be doing guided brewery tours throughout the day.

Pump House Brewing tells me that they will be making their Stone Fire Ale again this year, and hopefully every year, on September 3rd to celebrate their anniversary. Look for this beer in the special 750 ml bottles in October. They are also releasing SPCA IPA this fall in support of the animal charity, expect this one to be good and hoppy.

I tweeted this week that Shiretown Brewing has closed its doors. Sad news but the brewer is still working in the industry as a sales rep for another craft brewer.

TrailWay Brewing's two brewers' wives took over for a brew and it is now ready. It is called "Better Half" and is a 4.5% ABV Blueberry Lime Ale brewed with real lime and local blueberries. Sounds like a nice summer beer.

NB Liquor is celebrating the winners of this year’s Canadian Brewing Awards by offering a selection of 38 varieties of beer and one cider from among the medal winners. Participating corporate stores will have the brands available starting on August 31st, I have seen some of these beers already appearing in some stores.

Big Spruce Brewing will be harvesting their hops for a Community Harvest IPA next week, Jeremy assures me it will be a hoppy brew, watch their facebook page for updates. They also announced The 3rd Annual Big Spruce Home Brew Challenge. First, Second and Third Place will be announced in each of the 3 styles, plus there will be a declared overall "best in show" winner. Entrants that place in each of the style categories will each win a swag package, and the Best in Show winner will also be given the opportunity to brew their beer at Big Spruce Brewing for release in January 2016 at the 3rd Annual Craft Beer and Local Food festival put on by Local Connections in Halifax. The selected beer styles for the competition, per BJCP Style Guidelines 2015, are:
1) 21B. Specialty IPA - Red IPA
2) 7B. Altbier
3) 3D. Dark Czech Lager
All the details are available now so get brewing.

The Garrison Brewing collaboration brew they did with Great Lakes Brewery and Metalman Brewing earlier this month has a name. Not So Gentle Tickle IPA is being described as a monster of a IPA. Garrison also announced Hop’n’Brats happening on September 25th from 6 PM until 11 PM. They say breweries from across the province will be there to present their top brands, while enjoying your favorite Sausage themed food with live music. Entry is $16 which includes 5 sample tickets and a souvenir sample cup.

Boxing Rock Brewing and North Brewing were busy this week harvesting and brewing their annual Many Hands collaboration beer. Look for details and release date in the coming weeks on version 3.0.

Gahan House Halifax has a couple of interesting beers to look for. Karen Allen was visiting Emily from Boxing Rock last week and she was kind enough to let her harvest some Cascade and Chinook hops from her back yard. Karen will be doing a wet-hop pale ale with them that will be released the last week of September. Also being released that week will be an Oyster Beer to promote the Oyster Festival on October 4th. It`s fairly experimental, but the plan is for it to be an ultra pale ale with lemon and sea salt. Going to throw a bit of rye malt in there for a touch of spiciness. The plan is for it to pair well with oysters and it will be on tap at Gahan the whole week leading up to Oyster Festival.

Thanks for following along this week and until next time enjoy responsibly.

Boxing Rock says it is "Big, dark, malty and roasty, with notes of coffee, chocolate, with the teensiest bit of fruitiness in the background, this is everything a Robust Porter should be, including its 6.5% ABV strength. We added two big forward features to this palette. Cinnamon and molasses. The combination is quite complimentary of the porter, and we think it's a winner." Because this beer was brewed in observance of International Women's Day, Boxing Rock are donating a portion of the profits from this beer to the Shelburne County Women's Fishnet bursary program and the Halifax Sexual Health Centre. Grimross Brewing Company's new ‎Serendipity Series‬ Abbey Ale has a name, it will be called Monks Choice. They name came from Ryan Jacobson. From Nook and Cranny "We are bringing our love of craft beer to the next level by installing a brewing system on site. Our customers will soon be able to enjoy one of our three N&C Brew Co beers...and take a growler to go!". They are buying a system and that allows them to buy wort rather than starting with grains. The promise three taps, a light crisp one, a dark beer and a rotating seasonal with fresh products like blueberries, strawberries etc will be added.

They also added a touch of Haskap juice from our friends at Haskapa just for fun. Pours a pale straw with a tinge of red-blue from the haskap berries with a nice head and ample lacing. On the palate, the ginger comes first followed by cinnamon and a hint of that great haskap berry. It's backed up by a nice malt backbone, mild bitterness and a smooth finish. I want the beer to be approachable and fun, and for the brewery to share those traits.”
He is starting out by putting a new Extra Special Bitter on tap at Rockbottom. It's 5.2% ABV and 35 IBUs, It's copper coloured with an aroma of toast, honey and pears. Broad maltly body featuring coffee and toffee. Earthy balanced bitter finish.

Picaroons Traditional Ales says Feels Good Imperial Pilsner is back but in the latest batch they used some leftover local hops from their harvest ales. Traditionally the hop profile is only Saaz hops, though in this batch there's Nugget, Centennial, and Magnum.

Railcar Brewing Company says they are working on a Spiced Gingerbread Ale that will feature some oak chips soaked with spiced Sailor Jerry's Rum. That will be a great treat. Also after running out of beer for a few days there should be Brown Ale back on tap soon.

Shiretown Beer currently has five beers available at the brewery. They include their three year round beers, the Venezuelan Express (porter) and Black Currant Wheat. In addition they have a Hop Hash Strong Wheat Ale in the tank. They say u it is a 6.2% ABV with medium bitterness that is hopped with Southan Farms Hop Hash. The hop hash is made up of the farms Golding hops. The grist bill is half wheat malt and the other half is made up of prairie 2 Row, Munich, Vienna, Caramunich and topped off with toasted wheat.

Trail Way Brewing Company was busy as they prepare to open for business. This week they were brewing up a batch of imperial brown ale that they are calling Grizzly Oak. Brown that they say "like a grizzly and to be aged for some time on oak. Should be quite complex".

Staying with New Brunswick the ANBL has added another store to its growler program. Sackville is now offering three taps to fill growlers during select hours. This week is Picaroons Winter Warmer, Muskoka Cream Ale and Le Trou Du Diable L’Amère Indienne.

Boxing Rock Brewing Company introduced The Darkness Cascadian Dark Ale today at local bottle shops and the brewery. They say "a true India Pale Ale, albeit with an unexpected colour, it's hoppy, bright, and packed full of big flavours ... pours with almost stout-like black inkiness, capped with a nice tan head. First sensation is the hop forward presentation from copious amounts of late hops, and dry hops. It's followed by a gorgeous roasty body with a hint of wheat chewiness, fruity middle notes and then backed up by bracing bitterness in the finish". It is available in 650 ml bottles and has a 6.5 % ABV.
They also announced they are on tap in New Brunswick at The King Street Ale House in Fredericton, Tide and Boar Gastropub in Moncton, Lemongrass Thai Fare in Saint John, Ducky's in Sackville, Laundromat Espresso Bar in Moncton and 540 Kitchen & Bar in Fredericton.

From the blog "Our classic Bamberg-style Rauchbier was brewed with over 80% of the malted barley being beechwood-smoked, the remainder being Munich malt. It's a blend of smoke and malt with balance and intensity completely complementary of one another. A true lager with Märzen-like qualities sporting a malty, toasty richness and an almost bacon-like smokiness (mmm bacon), it's delicious. Finishes malty and lightly sweet with moderate, balanced, hop bitterness. It weighs in at 5.3 % ABV and 21 IBUs.

Rogue's Roost Brew Pub has a new beer on tap from Jake. The Double IPA is 8% ABV and 85 IBUs. It's hopped with Falconer's Flight, Cascade, Galena, and a touch of Saaz. Trail Way Brewing to open in Fredericton New Brunswick

FREDERICTON, NB - Two local homebrewers, Jake Saunders and Dan Mason, from the Fredericton area are about to open Trail Way Brewing, the city's third craft beer brewery. The brewery, which they hope to open in mid to late December depending how the licencing process goes, will be located off Canada Street in the Devon/Marysville area and situated along the Nashwaak Trail, which is where the name "Trail Way" came from.

Both Dan and Jake have been homebrewers for several years with most of their experience in all-grain brewing. Jake in addition to his homebrewing obsession is the current President of New Brunswick Craft Brewers Association.

The pair say a lot of the decision timing and the partnership. Both Saunders and Mason had a lot of fun sharing their brews with friends and family but had issues with brewing on a consistent basis. Brainstorming over a kitchen table at a NBCBA meeting the two, who knew each other quite well and enjoyed very similar beer styles, hatched Trail Way Brewing Company. They are excited to share their beer on a larger scale and it was a bit easier knowing they weren't going it alone.

Trail Way is starting with a one barrel electric brewing system. "We’ve pieced it together from various suppliers & manufacturers – we have 7 one BBL conical fermenters and 1 brite tank. At this point nearly all brewing equipment has been purchased and is on-site" they say.

Initial distribution will be in the form of kegs to pubs and restaurants in the Fredericton area and they hope to to start with 2 or 3 accounts and have interest for a couple of places. Once demand is gauged they want to open more accounts if their capacity allows.

When asked about what they will be brewing up they say "We both tend to brew a lot with American hops, but we also both love to experiment with different ingredients such as spices, fruit, etc.  We’re keeping it pretty broad and will focus on full-flavoured ales. With our homebrewing background, we’re excited to do a lot of specialty beers and one-off batches – possibly experimenting with some casks & barrels as well"

The partners say they are beyond excited to serve their beers in the Fredericton area and look forward to interacting with the public and receiving feedback on their beer. They also want to thank everyone who has helped them get to this point and a huge thank you to theirr significant others Catherine Saunders and Alex Sorensen on their efforts and support. Both of the ladies have been extremely encouraging of our brewing over the years and made this decision to open a brewery that much easier.

Check out Trail Way Brewing on facebook and on twitter and keep a look out for some TrailWay beers in the coming months!
